Scouting at the Wolcott Heritage Center: Exploring the Past, Empowering the Future

At the Wolcott Heritage Center, Scouts step back in time to explore 19th-century life through hands-on activities, historic crafts, and immersive storytelling. Scouts learn about pioneer skills, daily life in early Ohio, and the inspiring women and girls who helped shape our community. Each visit offers a unique blend of fun, friendship, and history, perfect for earning badges and creating lasting memories.

  • Playing in the Past

Step back into the Victorian Era at the Wolcott Heritage Center, where scouts will explore period fashions, create their own fashion fans and calling cards, and learn the secret language of the fan. They’ll also honor strong women of the time before enjoying tea and desserts at a special Victorian tea party. This program is open to 8–12 girls.

  • Social Butterfly

Scouts will practice conversation skills and table manners while setting the table and sharing a light meal in the historic Wolcott House. They’ll explore past and present celebrations, proper dress, and rituals, then create decorated thank-you notes to take home. This program is open to 8–12 girls and runs May through November.

  • Detective

Scouts will sharpen their observation skills through activities at the Wolcott Heritage Center, including a tour of the railroad depot, experimenting with Morse Code, and exploring historic handwriting. A scavenger hunt and fingerprint activity will build detective skills, with each scout taking home a unique record of themselves. This program is open to 8–12 girls and runs May through November.

  • Gardener

Scouts will explore raised bed gardening at the Wolcott property, learning how to choose plants suited to our hardiness zone and how to plant seeds with proper timing, depth, and spacing. They’ll tour the flower, vegetable, and heritage gardens, then take home a plant to nurture. This program is offered May through September and is open to 8–15 girls.

  • Flowers

Scouts will explore the many flowers at the Wolcott Heritage Center, from community and heritage gardens to decorative plantings, while discovering their scents, textures, and structures. They’ll learn how flowers were used historically for healing, record their observations, and create preserved flower artwork. This program is offered May through September and is open to 8–15 girls.

  • Bugs – Exclusively for Brownies

Scouts will explore the many insects living around the Wolcott Heritage Center by searching under stones, in the grass, and throughout the grounds. They’ll research a specific bug, create a poster and craft, and investigate bug homes. This program is offered May through September and is open to 8–12 girls.
